Maryland State Resource Conservationist Steve Strano presents the MD Pollinator Seed Mix Tool. Steve introduces the tool, explains how it works, and describes how it can be adapted for use in other regions and states. This innovation was recently added to the Employee Innovation Portal as an Innovation Ready for Use.
The Maryland Pollinator Seed Mix Tool was developed to assist with designing and evaluating high diversity grass and wildflower mixes. The primary inputs for the tool are the species in the mix, the percent of the species by seed, and the number of seeds per square foot. The tool provides an output sheet that can be provided to clients. The output shows the percent of each species by both weight and number of seeds, the type of plant (i.e. grass, forb, legume), the flower color and season for wildflowers in the mix, the seeding rate in lb/ac PLS, and the percentage of grasses and forbs/legumes in the mix. The tool contains many plant characteristics that can assist with developing a mix that is appropriate for a particular soil moisture regime. It also has a function where the inputs are in percent by weight and converts it to percent by seed, which can be useful for evaluating mixes provided by suppliers.
