The webinar titled “Conversations on Soil Health #12: Focusing on the Underserved Communities” explores the critical intersection of soil health and equitable outreach in agriculture. Hosted by Bianca Moebius-Clune, the discussion emphasizes the importance of ensuring that soil health initiatives reach historically underserved producers, including those in diverse geographic and cultural communities. The session features four leaders who share successful strategies for engaging underserved populations and underscores the need for broader collaboration and knowledge-sharing across the country. Participants are encouraged to contribute ideas, suggest overlooked communities, and help shape future discussions to promote inclusive soil health efforts at every scale—from urban gardens to large-scale rangelands.
This webinar, titled "Conservations on Soil Health #12: Focusing on the Underserved Communities," addresses the crucial topic of equity and inclusion in promoting soil health practices across the United States. It highlights the importance of reaching historically underserved producers, including various racial and ethnic groups, women, veterans, and small or micro-farmers. The speakers, hailing from California, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Alaska, share success stories and strategies for intentional outreach, emphasizing the need to adapt soil health messages and conservation practices to diverse farming systems and cultural contexts. The discussion also touches upon the historical civil rights complaints within the USDA and the ongoing efforts to ensure equitable service and fund distribution to all farmers and ranchers. The webinar is primarily designed for agencies' field staff to help them gain ideas and learn from experiences across the country regarding soil health implementation. However, it also attracts a broader audience, including the public and various partners working in agriculture. The goal is to foster collaboration and networking to increase the adoption of soil health management systems nationwide, recognizing that a diverse group of people can be involved at all scales, from small urban gardens to large-scale range operations. The presenters stress the significance of building relationships and trust within communities, as well as adapting technical assistance to overcome language and cultural barriers Webinar Agenda: Introduction and Welcome "Striving Toward Equity and Civil Rights Compliance in Conservation Program Delivery" by Victor Hernandez (California) Pacific Islands Area Soil Health Successes by Amy Koch (Hawaii) NRCS Caribbean Area Soil Health Efforts and Challenges by Manuel Matos Rodriguez (Puerto Rico & U.S. Virgin Islands) Promoting Soil Health Principles with Alaska Natives by Pamela Voeller (Alaska) Q&A Session
